Sarah's Family

Sarah and Her Siblings
Sarah Cockram, my great great grandmother, was born in Stockleigh Pomeroy in 1824. Her parents, James and Charity, leased Westwood Farm from Sir Humphrey Phineas Davie, who seems to have owned much of the land in the area. You can see that on the Friends of Devon Tithes Apportionment map. James and Charity had nine children: Faith Charity (b. 1812), Anthony (b. 1814), James (b. 1816), William Rudge (b. 1818), Grace Ridge (b. 1819), Elizabeth (b.1824), Sarah (b. 1824), Mary Anne (b. 1829), and John Huish (b. 1832).

In 1841 the family was living on the farm, although Sarah was living on Wellcoombe Farm a couple of miles away, where she was listed as an apprentice.  Not all of her siblings were living at home.

Previous Generation
James Cockram, Sarah's father, was the son of Anthony (sometimes Anturney) Cockram and Elizabeth Baker. They married in 1764 and had at least five children in two different towns. The first two were born in Cheriton Fitzpaine, the next three in Stockleigh Pomeroy. The children were: William (b. 1768), Richard (b. 1775), Sarah (b. 1777), Anthony (b. 1779), and James (b. 1783). Sarah married Philip Yeandall in 1802 and was living on the othert half of Westwood Farm in 1841. There may have been more children, considering the gaps, but it's also possible that Elizabeth had a few miscarriages or stillbirths.

Charity Cockram, Sarah's mother, was born Charity Hewish in 1788. Her mother Faith (born Melhuish), died giving birth to her or shortly after. Faith was born in 1764 and married John Hewish in 1785. Sarah Hewish was born in 1786 and her sister Charity three year's later. Thus, Faith was just 24 when she died.
